Choosing the right conversion
Most conversion problems come down to one thing: whether the PDF holds real text or just a picture of text. A PDF exported from Word, Google Docs or a design tool carries its characters with it, so converting it to Word or Excel gives you something you can actually edit. A PDF produced by a scanner or a phone camera is a stack of images, and no ordinary converter can pull words out of an image.
A quick way to tell them apart: open the PDF and try to select a sentence with your cursor. If the text highlights, it is real text. If nothing selects, it is scanned, and you want PDF to Word (OCR), which runs character recognition first.
Tables are the other common frustration. PDF has no concept of a table — it just places text at coordinates, so a converter has to infer where rows and columns were. Ruled borders and consistent spacing convert cleanly; tables held together by whitespace alone often need tidying afterwards. If your goal is spreadsheet data rather than a document, PDF to Excel targets that directly, and bank statements have a dedicated converter tuned for their layouts.
Converting the other direction is far more predictable. PDF is a fixed-layout format, so going from Word, Excel, PowerPoint or an image into PDF preserves what you see. That is exactly why PDF became the standard for anything that has to look identical on every device — contracts, invoices, portfolios and forms.
